New rules on maritime fuel for 2015

Container Ship CAOBW0Q4
From 1 January 2015, the new EU Sulpher directive comes into effect, requiring a drastic reduction in sulphur emissions from all vessels operating in the “Sulpher Emission” control areas (covering the Baltic Sea, the North Sea & the English Channel). Ships operating in these areas must use fuel with a maximum sulphur content of 0.10% as opposed to the current 1%, or an alternative solution which meets the equivalent effect.
Unfortunately here at Otec we can only see one final result in this change – an increase in sea freight costs to all customers (both freight & passenger).
We will of course be monitoring this situation and keep all customers fully informed as the full impact becomes clearer from the ferry operators.
